When does Microsoft Publisher end?

Microsoft retires Publisher on October 13, 2026. On that date the app is disabled for Microsoft 365 subscribers (it no longer installs and .pub files stop opening in Publisher), and Microsoft ends support for the perpetual editions of Office 2021 and earlier (Publisher keeps launching, but no more security updates or bug fixes). Files themselves do not disappear from disk. The safety move is exporting every .pub to PDF before that date.

What happens on October 13, 2026

Microsoft retires Publisher from Microsoft 365. For subscribers, the application is disabled: it will not install anymore and .pub files will not open. The same date matches the end of standard support for Office 2021 and earlier perpetual editions: those apps keep working technically, but will no longer receive updates or security patches.

The distinction is sharp and important: subscription equals loss of access, perpetual license equals frozen last-chance. Why Microsoft is retiring Publisher

Publisher was born in 1991 as a page-layout tool for small businesses, schools and associations. It never landed on Mac or in the web version of Office, and it has received no real new features in the past decade. Microsoft points to Word for text-heavy documents and to PowerPoint for graphic material and free-form layouts as alternatives.

The real problem: the archives

The .pub file is a closed format that no other program reads reliably. Whoever has used Publisher for years (association newsletters, small-business flyers, menus, brochures) ends up with archives of hundreds or thousands of files that, from October 13, may no longer open. Time is there to act, but not infinite.

What to do now, in three steps

One. Find every .pub file. On Windows, in File Explorer, search for *.pub under Documents and your work folders. Check OneDrive, SharePoint and the USB sticks of older collaborators too: archives often live in scattered places.

Two. Convert everything to PDF. PDF opens anywhere forever, prints identically, does not depend on Microsoft. It is the safety net. Two dates circulate: October 1, 2026 is the end of mainstream support for Office LTSC 2021, October 13, 2026 is the end of extended support and the date Publisher leaves Microsoft 365. For most people the cut-off is October 13: from that day subscribers lose the app. Perpetual editions stay installable and usable, without updates.

Migration checklist: what to do before October

1. Inventory: search *.pub on every PC, OneDrive, external drive, USB stick.
2. Backup: copy every .pub into a dedicated folder before touching anything.
3. PDF everything: safety net. Even files you will never reopen — PDFs last forever.
4. Content extraction on "live" files: recurring docs — extract text and images so you can relay them out in an alternative.
5. Rebuild key templates: 3-5 monthly templates, rebuild once in Canva or PowerPoint.
6. Final archive: ZIP with all PDFs + originals + extracted content. Keep it forever.

What about after October 13?

Even after the date, .pub files do not vanish: they stay on your disk. The problem is that the only program that opens them properly will be perpetual Publisher on some PCs still switched on — a fragile situation that decays over time (Windows updates, new computers, new colleagues). Better convert now, calmly, than later, in a rush.
